Reporting Phishing Emails

Phishing emails are messages from untrustworthy sources that attempt to gather personal information from you and/or have you download an attachment/click on a link that is infected with malware/viruses.

Here are instructions for reporting phishing emails:

  • Open the email (but do not download any attachments or click any links within it).
  • Go to “File” (within the message) and then click on “Properties.”
  • In the Properties menu, find the field that is labeled “Internet Headers” and copy the data within it (see image below). You can do this by highlighting the information in that field and right-clicking to copy or pressing CTRL+C simultaneously.

  • Forward the original email to servicedesk@shu.edu, and be sure to paste the internet headers into the body of the forwarded message.

Following these instructions, IT will be able to block the sender of the phishing message.
