1. A Seton Hall University requirement for graduation from certain Master and Doctoral programs is that the student provides the academic department and University Archives with a bound copy of the student's thesis or dissertation. In addition, doctoral students are required to provide an additional dissertation copy for microfilming.

2. The University Library serves to receive Master’s Theses and Doctoral Dissertations for binding. The payment of any and all fees and issuance of receipts is handled by Denise D'Agostino (973-275-2784 or dagostde@shu.edu ), Periodicals Dept., University Library between 8:30 am and 12:30 noon and 1:30 - 3 pm.  People can stop by the Circulation Desk and ask for Denise.

3. All theses and dissertations must be printed on acid-free paper.

4. The thesis or dissertation must have an abstract of up to 350 words. The abstract typically follows the title page. See UMI’s "Preparing Your Abstract" for guidelines. (UMI is the name of the company that microfilms dissertations.)

5. The thesis or dissertation must have a page where the adviser's or mentor's name is clearly indicated.

6. It is the graduate's responsibility to verify that the thesis or dissertation contains a title page and abstract. The graduate must also verify that all pages are in correct order. The University Library assumes no responsibility to check submissions for completeness, correct order, upside-down or missing pages, etc. Authors of dissertations are encouraged to review UMI’s Author Check List to avoid common errors, omissions, etc.

7. Required number of copies:

·        All candidates for the Masters degree are required to submit an original and two (2) copies (total of three copies) of their thesis for binding. The original and copies must be on acid-free paper.

·        All candidates for the Doctoral degree are required to submit an original and three (3) copies of their dissertation for binding (total of four copies). The original and copies must be on acid-free paper. One of the copies is for microfilming.

8. At its own expense, the University Library may make an additional copy of the dissertation or thesis for binding for incorporation in the University Library's circulating collection and may scan a copy for digital inclusion in the University Library collection.

9. Forms to complete:

·        All Master and Doctoral candidates must complete the "Thesis Binding Form."

·        All Doctoral candidates must complete and sign the "UMI’s “Doctoral Dissertation Agreement Form" for microfilming.

·        All candidates are asked to sign the form, “Permission for Seton Hall University Library to Place a Digital Copy of Your Thesis or Dissertation in Its Collection.

10. Required fees: All fees must be paid by check. No cash will be accepted.

·        $75. Binding of three copies, each additional copy (provided by the candidate) for $25.00. Check payable to Seton Hall University. The three copies are distributed as follows: University Archives, Department Archives, Author's copy.

·        $55. Microfilming fee. Make check payable to UMI, Inc.

·        $65. Copyright fee (optional) for registration with the Library of Congress Copyright Office. Make check payable to UMI, Inc.

11. Persons depositing a thesis or dissertation for binding will be given a signed receipt for the thesis and fees.

12. Person depositing a thesis or dissertation must designate if the bound thesis or dissertation will be picked-up at the University Library or if it should be mailed to a home/business address.
