Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry

The Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry was incorporated on August 6, 1954,  under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.  It was a legal entity separate from the University but with an interlocking board of Trustees. In November of the same year, the Department of Education, State of New Jersey, granted it a charter. The College was an independent, non-profit institution of higher learning located in Jersey City and associated with the Jersey City Medical Center. It was the first facility for medical and dental education in the state.

The first class, consisting of eighty candidates for the M.D. degree, was admitted in September 1956.  Between 1960- 1964 the College awarded 348 MD degrees and 139 Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees by 1963. In the 1960s a growing financial deficit threatened the school's closure and in 1964 a committee appointed by Governor Richard J. Hughes recommended that the school operate under state control. The State purchased the assets of the SHCMD for $4 million dollars and on May 3, 1965, the name was changed to the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry(NJCMD).
