A National Society of the Red Cross was organized in America at the end of the 19th century; between 1882 and 1904 Clara Barton was its president. The American Red Cross became the official disaster relief arm of the U.S. Government in 1905, with America's president at its head. As World War I besieged Europe the need for relief supplies grew on a scale never before seen. Although the first Liberty Loan Drive was already underway, the Red Cross appeal the week of June 18-25,1917, brought in $115 million. Another drive held the next year resulted in $182 million. A membership drive during one-week at Christmas enrolled 16 million people.
