FANTASIA... SUEÑO DEL CARIBE Works by Alberto Ulloa November 13, 1997-January 7,1998
The Walsh Library Gallery in cooperation with the Puerto Rican Institute at Seton Hall University is featuring a collection of works by Dominican Republic artist Alberto Ulloa entitled "Fantasia... Sueño del Caribe." The collection will be on display from Thursday, November 13, 1997 through Wednesday, January 7, 1998. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evening and special showings may be arranged.Walsh Library Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, November 21, 1997 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attenthis free event to meet the artist and celebrate with Spanish food and music. Ulloa was born in 1950 in Altamira, Dominican Republic. He graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in 1974 where he studied painting. In 1975 he was granted the Alberto Rodriguez Urdaneta scholarship to continue his studies at the San Fernando School in Spain where he studied mural painting, art history and esthetic ideas. In 1977 he received a postgraduate degree as professor of plastic arts from the royal Academy of San Fernando, Madrid, Spain. Ulloa has received numerous award including the National School of Fine Arts prize in 1973, two prizes for painting at the Hispanic-American School of Madrid, one in 1974 and another in 1975, the Adaja prize in 1978 and a prize for painting in the XIV Plastic Arts Biennial in 1979. In 1996 he received the Diploma of Honor from the Institute of Hispanic Culture of Miami, Florida, and in 1992 the Fifth Centennial Prize, awarded by the Spanish State Commission for the V Centennial, within the context of the International Exhibition "20 Paintings of America and Spain." Ulloas artistic career has moved from impressionism and lyrical poetry to colorful vibrations. His style radiates enchantment, rage, poetry and fire. Ulloa has exhibited internationally including solo exhibits this past year in Puerto Rico; Rome; Italy and Miami Beach, Florida. His works hangs in many prestigious collection in Spain including the Royal Place, the Queen Sofia Museum and the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art. His work is part of important private collections in the Dominican Republic, the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Venezuela, Argentina, Israel, Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Canada, Panama, Italy and Moscow. The title of the exhibit, "Fantasia... Sueño del Caribe" means "Fantasies... Caribbean Dreams." Ulloas rebellious charm moves to a place where the Heart of Fantasy and Tomorrows Caribbean Dreams sleep. This is a collaborative exhibition with Jersey City State College. The Jersey City State College Art Gallery will present an exhibit of Ulloa's works entitled, "Fantasia... La Muerte del Fantasma" from January 12 through January 21, 1998.
