In collaboration with Yale University and New Haven
Public Schools, established a Community Technology Center in a
neighborhood branch library. Center taught basic computer
applications, assisted users in job searches, established
intergenerational programs between retirees and children.

Initiated Ethnic Heritage series to celebrate the
city’s African-American, Latino, Italian and Jewish heritage.
STATE LIBRARY OF NORTH CAROLINA

Created prototype statewide electronic information
network that delivered commercial and governmental data to all 100
counties in the state. (Note: Constructed 6 years before introduction of
WWW.)

Wrote legislation that required the use of alkaline
paper in state government publications. Worked with General Assembly to
gain passage of legislation.

Wrote legislation that created a new State Library
Commission. Worked with General Assembly to gain passage of legislation.

Developed the "Nurse on a Bookmobile" program in
collaboration with the School of Nursing at East Carolina University to
test the delivery of maternal-child care to rural areas using
bookmobiles.

Created and funded a job development project in remote
rural mountain county to help county begin to develop new industrial
base.

Created and produced Public Service Announcements (PSA)
in conjunction with the Atlantic Coast Athletic Conference (ACC). PSAs
featured athletes and coaches from the four ACC member universities in
the state urging young adults to "Stay in School, Use Your Public
Library, and Read". Broadcast during conference games and by local TV
stations, the PSAs were seen by millions of people across the South and
U.S. They were also broadcast by CBS SPORTS and were presented the
Exceptional Achievement Award by the National Commission on Libraries
and Information Sciences. First Lady Barbara Bush presented the award
during ceremonies at the Library of Congress.
