There are a wide variety of resources available through Walsh Library and the other members of our library consortia on both Stalin and the tumultuous period he helped shaped. You will want to start your research by consulting print references sources at Seton Hall. These can be accessed through our online catalog
Three in particular will prove valuable in beginning your research:
Joseph Stalin: a bibliographical companion, temporarily shelved at the circulation desk under Dr. Knight's name.
The multi-volume Modern Encyclopedia of Russian and Soviet History. Call number: Reference Collection DK14.M6
The multi-volume Great Soviet Encyclopedia Call number: Reference Collection AE5.B58
You also will want to become familiar with the Library of Congress subject headings associated with this period of Soviet history. LC subject headings are organized by geographical entity, individual or corporate name, or topic.
Some sample subject headings are:
Soviet Union History German occupation, 1941-1944
Stalin, Joseph, 1879-1953
Socialist realism in literature
Print journals include the Current Digest of the Soviet Press, which resumed publication under the title, the Current Digest of the Post-Soviet Press, the Russian Review, the Slavic Review, and limited runs of the Slavic and East European Journal and Russian History. Some of these journal titles may overlap or be supplemented by electronic versions. The list of electronic journals is available online
As you begin to look at electronic information, please note that some of our databases provide full-text articles, while others only citations.
Excellent databases for research are Historical Abstracts, Project Muse, Jstor, MLA and Academic Search Premier. Both on-campus and off-campus access is available for Seton Hall students.
You'll need to refer to one of our maps, to find the location of books at Walsh Library:
If you can't find a book or journal article you need in our library, you may request from another library using an Interlibrary Loan Form.
