Command - SEARCH STRATEGIES 

  • Select Command Search 
  • Type your terms into the search box
    Keyword

 For Command searching:

  • Use AND, OR, NOT in capitals to combine search terms:  

    AND will find records containing both terms:
    women AND health      
    OR will find records containing either term:
    journalism OR reporting     
    NOT will exclude records containing unwanted terms:
    fatigue NOT metal     
  • The terms AND, OR, NOT must be in capitals (you can type the whole search in capitals) 
  • Use opening/closing brackets to group similiar terms:

("death penalty" OR "capital punishment") AND (criminals OR recidivists)  

  • Use quotation marks to search phrases: "capital punishment"  

For Example: 

1. You are looking for material on the role of playing in child development. Type in the following search: 
“child development” AND play?

2. You are giving a seminar on diet as a contributing factor for heart disease. Type in the following search:

 (diet OR nutrition) AND "heart disease"
