ASSIGNMENT
1. Studies are assigned, as available, for library-based
research. (Click here
for an application form)
2. Eligible are SHU faculty (active and emeritus), students, and administrators, visiting scholars, and other qualified researchers; the following will receive priority:
a. Full-time SHU faculty who are on sabbatical leave; have an established publication
record, including an active research program and publication in the last three years by a major refereed journal or recognized scholarly press; have a
project approved by the University Research Council; are new, tenure-truck, and working toward publication of a dissertation, refereed scholarly article, or refereed book-length manuscript; or have office arrangements, teaching loads, or other
circumstances that particularly inhibit research.
b. Graduate students preparing a thesis or dissertation with endorsement from appropriate SHU unit.
c. Honors students preparing an Honors paper.
d. Visiting scholars who are formally affiliated with a recognized SHU unit and have a clearly defined research project the unit has approved.
3. The assignment term is normally one month to one semester. (Spring: Jan.-May; summer: June-August;
Fall: Sept.-Dec.) Studies must be renewed at the beginning of each academic year and will not be renewed beyond a two-year (2) period.
4. Assignment is for individual, or joint use.
5. Use is to be only by the assignee(s).
6. The necessary application form is available at the Reference Desk, Office of the Dean or by phone (9005); students and visiting scholars require signed endorsement from the appropriate SHU unit or program.
7. A required $75 deposit is refunded when the Study is satisfactorily vacated and the key returned. The major portion of the deposit covers the cost of rekeying the lock in the event that the key is not returned.
8. The Library reserves the right to revoke an assignment if the Study is determined to be either unused or improperly used; a Study no longer needed for library-based research is to be relinquished even if the assigned term has not expired.
9. A Study not vacated by the end of the assigned term will be cleared of all materials.
10. For security reasons, a master key to the Scholar's Studies is not available after 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on weekends. An occupant accidentally locked out of the Study is personally responsible for contacting Physical Plant, and for all costs incurred for the University locksmith to return to campus after hours to unlock the door.
USE OF LIBRARY RESOURCES
1. Circulating Library resources to be kept overnight must be charged out at the Circulation Desk; those not charged out will be removed and reshelved.
2. Periodicals and Reference Collection items may not be kept or charged out.
3. Audio resources may be used only with headphones.
FURNITURE AND EQUIPMENT
1. Standard equipment is one chair, built-in work surface, and window blind; the chair is to remain there, additional library chairs are not to be moved into the Study, the blind is not to be raised, and any additional library, media, or archival equipment provided is subject to regular policies and procedures.
2. With the exception of a personal computer, no personal furniture or equipment is permitted in the Study.
3. Noisy, hazardous, or otherwise inappropriate equipment is prohibited; this includes--but is not necessarily limited to -- blenders, coffee and teapots, electric heaters and fans, hot plates, microwave and toaster ovens, popcorn poppers, refrigerators, toasters, typewriters, incense and
candles.
SECURITY
1. To comply with the NEW JERSEY STATE FIRE CODE, the door (interior) window must remain totally uncovered at all times.
2. The key is not to be copied or lent.

4. Security problems are to be reported promptly to the Library.

2. The studies are not designed as offices or conference rooms, and are not to be used as such: Library
Personnel will not take phone messages or refer visitors.
3. Occupants must provide their own supplies (e.g., pen, paper, and notepads) the Library will not.
4. Cleaning will be done periodically without notice; wastebaskets to be emptied should be placed just
outside the door.
5. Library personnel may enter without notice to check on maintenance, cleaning, and security, and to arrange for necessary maintenance and cleaning.
6. Failure to comply with these policies and procedures will jeopardize the Study assignment.
