Rules on Access

The Interprofessional Health Sciences Library (IHS Library) is intended primarily for the use of currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty, administrators and staff at Seton Hall University or the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

General Conditions for Access

  • A valid SHU or HMSOM ID card must be available and/or visible for presentation to a member of the University Public Safety and/or to Health Sciences Library personnel at all times
  • Persons using the Interprofessional Health Sciences Library may be under video surveillance.
  • Persons using the Interprofessional Health Sciences Library must not create a disturbance or exhibit behavior that interferes in any manner with normal, or other person's use of the Library.
  • Students who do not comply with the rules outlined above may be asked to leave the Library, and an incident report will be filed with the Dean for Community Development; in addition, the student may be reported to appropriate law enforcement authorities.
  • The IHS Library is NOT open to the Public. 
  • Persons other than current students whose behavior is not consistent with the rules outlined above:
    • may be asked to leave the Library,
    • may be reported to appropriate law enforcement authorities and subject to arrest,
    • and may be barred from using the University Libraries for a given period, even permanently.

Print Reference Collection 

The Interprofessional Health Sciences Library holds a small collection of print reference materials. Print Reference Materials are for use only within the library space. Any item that leaves the library will set off the security gates, which are located at every library entrance.

Rules on Mobile Devices 

  • Mobile devices such as cell phones, smart phones and pagers are permitted in the IHS Library. However, they must be used in a way that avoids disturbing other library users.
  • Mobile devices must be turned to silent or vibrate mode.
  • Any conversation on a mobile device should be held in an area where it will not disturb or distract others.

Food and Drink Rules

  • Food and Drink is permitted in the Interprofessional Health Sciences Library and Information Commons.
  • Drinks must be kept in covered containers.
  • Food preparation (i.e. cooking of any kind) by library patrons is prohibited in all areas of the library.
  • All food and drink waste and containers must be properly disposed of in appropriate trash or recycling bins, located throughout the library.

Study Rooms Rules

  • Authorized Users
    • Students, staff, and faculty of Seton Hall University and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.
  • Intended Use
    • Study rooms are for studying, group discussion, and working on projects.
    • Group study rooms are intended for use by 2 to 6 people.
    • Individual study rooms are intended for use by 1 to 2 people.
  • Room Reservations
    • Rooms must be reserved in advance. 
    • Reservations must be made via:
    • The maximum reservation time is 3 hours per person, per room category in a 24 hour period.
    • Individuals must use a valid shu.edu address to reserve a room, and use of multiple shu.edu email addresses is prohibited.
    • When making multiple reservations for the same room, your reservation must contain at least a 1 hour gap from your previous reservation.
    • Reservations can be made 7 days in advance.
    • Reserved rooms that are unoccupied after 15 minutes are subject to a loss of reservation. Please make every effort to show up to your reservation on time.
    • Please vacate the room by your scheduled reservation end time.
    • If an individual or group is using a room without having reserved the room, they must yield to those who have booked that room.
    • Room bookings that do not abide by our Study Rooms Rules will be canceled.
  • Food and Drink
    • Food and Drink is permitted in study rooms.
    • Drinks must be kept in covered containers.
    • All food and drink waste and containers must be properly disposed of in appropriate trash or recycling bins, located throughout the library.
  • Guidelines
    • Keep the noise level low so as to not disturb others in adjoining rooms.
    • Keep rooms clean.
    • Do not leave items unattended. The Library is not responsible for lost or stolen property.
