Humanitarian Mapping

Humanitarian Mapping involves the use of GIS data in order to create, validate, and share maps. Its purpose is to help serve areas that lack mapping, with the goal of helping meet health, education, and humanitarian goals across the world.

Questions to Ask

From “A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper”

  • Who what when where why and how
  • How many, how likely, what fraction,  how does quantity compare with other quantities
  • What is its rate of growth and how does that compare?
  • Are you looking at the right categories and relations
  • How were statistics obtained, how confident can we be of them?
  • Were they derived from a random sample or a collection of anecdotes?
  • Does the correlation suggest a causal relationship, or is it a coincidence?
