What are Creatve Commons licenses?

What is Creative Commons?

Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables you to legally share your knowledge and creativity through free legal tools.

What Creative Commons licenses do?

The Creative Commons copyright licenses and tools forge a balance inside the traditional “all rights reserved” setting that copyright law creates. Our tools give everyone from individual creators to large companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work. The combination of our tools and our users is a vast and growing digital commons, a pool of content that can be copied, distributed, edited, remixed, and built upon, all within the boundaries of copyright law (Creative Commons, 2017)

Creative Commons Licenses

Creative Commons Licenses are not an alternative to copyright. They work alongside copyright and enable the modification of copyright terms to fit specific needs. Applying a Creative Commons License to a work can be thought of as changing, "All rights reserved" to "Some right reserved."
