The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is a nationally recognized non-profit organization committed to building a unique, suburban community that is free of racial segregation in housing patterns and community involvement. The Coalition was founded in 1996 by a diverse group of citizens concerned about stagnating property values and a perceived decline in the quality of local public schools. Since then, we have developed programs that promote the advantages of living in a racially inclusive community where all aspects of community life are integrated. The organization is run by a volunteer, racially representative Board of Trustees that includes ex officio representatives from both municipalities and the Board of Education. The Trustees chair committees staffed by community volunteers of varied races, faiths, and economic backgrounds who have an expressed commitment to achieving and sustaining the benefits of a thriving, racially integrated and truly inclusive community. Our programs and activities serve all the residents of our two towns as well as surrounding communities that seek our support and advice on intentional integration strategies.

A Model for America investigates how black and white South Orange, New Jersey residents formed alliances in order to transform their community from a predominantly white community into a racially integrated community. Interviews with residents and community activists, local and national newspapers, and community organizations’ internal documents, reveal a history, spanning from 1963 to the late 1990s, of black and white residents using civic associations to voluntarily integrate the community in order to increase property values.

Mission - Our mission is to develop a powerful multimedia interactive archive to teach the lessons of African American struggle for empowerment in the nation’s major urban centers in the North, focusing on the era of the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. “The North” is a new educational tool for all people, but primarily for youth in grade school through college and beyond, to enable research and to preserve the record of those people who were “foot soldiers” in the Civil Rights, Black Power and other Movements in the North. It is a means to teach social justice issues through history of the African American struggle for power, and keep these stories alive for generations to come.
