NAICS codes:

• North American Classification System (NAICS) codes are useful for industry research. Find the appropriate code via the US Census Bureau: https://www.census.gov/naics/
  • You can search for the 2022 NAICS code by keyword. Example: coffee shop = 722515
• Once you have identified the proper NAICS code, you can find further information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

• Searching trade associations for industry information can also be an avenue to explore.
  • You can search for in the syntax: product trade association. For example: pasta trade association 
    • This search will yield results including: https://ilovepasta.org/ (The National Pasta Association)

Trends:

• You can research industry trends using the syntax: trends in X industry. For example: trends in ice cream industry
  •  This search will yield results including: https://www.idfa.org/ice-cream-sales-trends (International Dairy Foods Association)

Terminology:

• Become familiar with the terminology of the industry. Doing multiple searches and picking up key terms can be a helpful exercise.
