Borrow, Renew, & Return

Borrowing privileges are extended to SHU students, faculty, staff and members of the SHU Alumni, and to community residents through a borrowing agreement with the ReBL Reciprocating Borrowing and Lending Program. Note:

  • E-Z Borrow: loan period of 12 weeks. No renewals.
  • Interlibrary loan: loan period of 39 days. One renewal.
  • EZB and Inter Library Loan books will be held for 10 days.  If not picked up within 10 days they will be sent back to the lending library.  Holds will be held for 3 days and returned to the main collection if not picked up within 72 hours
  • The fine rate for overdue E-Z Borrow and ILL books is $1 per day.

Circulation Procedures

  • Journals do not circulate.
  • We do not accept cash for Circulation fines/fees. Payment can be made by Pirate Gold, check or money order. 
  • Books are no longer being stamped with a due date. 
  • You are responsible for all material checked out on your card and for knowing the due dates. A receipt with book titles and due dates will be printed if requested when the material is charged out. 
  • You are responsible for returning or renewing materials on time. 
  • To view a list of library materials checked out on your account and their due dates, from the Services drop-down menu at the top of this page, select My Account. You may also access your Library Account from within SHUSearch; if on campus, chose "Sign in" on the upper right page of the SHUSearch results page. If off campus, you are already logged in; just select the "folder" option.
  • You may renew books once if they are not overdue. Overdue books must be renewed in person at the Circulation Desk.  
  • Overdue notices and statements of fines and fees are sent via e-mail on a regular basis to all patrons with Seton Hall e-mail addresses. You are responsible for checking your e-mail for these notices.

VALE Reciprocal Borrowing Seton Hall University faculty & students may apply for access and borrowing privileges at 45 New Jersey colleges and universities that are members of VALE (the Virtual Academic Library Consortium).

Reciprocal Borrowing and Lending Consortium The Reciprocal Borrowing and Lending Consortium allows ReBL card holders to access 21 member libraries in Essex County (NJ).

Lost, Repair and Replacement Charges

Items that are 45 days overdue are considered lost and:

  • you will receive a bill for the average replacement and processing costs of $100.00 per item.
  • you may contact the Circulation Desk (973-761-9435 | circulation@shu.edu) for the actual cost of the item.
  • your borrowing privileges will be suspended and a hold may be placed on your library account.
  • Seton Hall University reserves the right to hold transcripts and diplomas as a result of nonpayment.

Patrons are not charged for normal wear and tear on library materials. However, the following conditions do not constitute normal wear and tear and may result in repair or replacement charges (charges are determined based on the particular circumstances of each case):

  • wet or moldy items
  • items damaged by food stains, oily or sticky residue
  • items missing pages or covers
  • item containing marking by pencil, ink or highlight marker
  • items showing tears, cuts, graffiti or other unusual damage
